Lemma is a free AI vocabulary coach for intermediate and advanced English learners. Paste any text, or upload a photo, and Lemma pulls out the words worth learning, explains them, and helps you actually remember them.
How it works
- Capture. Paste any text or upload a photo. Lemma extracts unfamiliar words, phrases, and idioms, converts them to dictionary form, and lets you pick which ones to save.
- Learn. Every saved word gets an AI-generated dictionary entry: pronunciation, definitions by part of speech, example sentences, collocations, synonyms and antonyms, common mistakes, and a usage note. Pick your own language in Settings and each definition is also shown, and read aloud, translated into it.
- Practice. Six gamified exercises (Word Quiz, Fill in the Blank, Spot the Mistake, Spelling, a Comprehension passage, and an AI-narrated Podcast) are generated from your own saved words. Correct answers earn XP, build a daily streak, and unlock badges.
- Ask. A personal AI English tutor chat that already knows your saved words, for grammar questions, sentence checks, or conversation practice.

Can Lemma translate words into my own language?
Yes. Choose your own language in Settings and every English definition is shown, and read aloud, with a translation beneath it. Around 60 languages are available, including Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian, Malay, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Vietnamese. Leave it set to None to keep everything in English.
Where are my saved words stored?
On your own device, in your browser's local storage. Lemma has no account and no server database, so your word list, progress and settings never leave your device except for the text sent to AI models to generate definitions. You can export a backup as a JSON or Excel file from Settings at any time.
Is Lemma free to use?
Yes. Lemma is free, with no account, no sign-up, no subscription and no paywall. There is an optional donation link for anyone who wants to help cover the running costs, but every feature works the same whether you donate or not.
Word of the Day
Lemma publishes a free Word of the Day: one word, with its pronunciation, meaning, and example sentences, the same word for everyone, refreshed daily. No account needed to read it.
